Finding the Ingredients to Make Your Own Chicago Style Hot Dog

It's easy and fun to make your own Chicago Dog at home, but finding the necessary ingredients can sometimes prove to be quite challenging. It is obviously simple to find yellow mustard, onion and tomato, but finding the other necessities for you Chicago Style dog is not always that easy. To make your life easier, we have put together this page to help you locate those hard to find items.

All Beef Hot Dogs
Vienna brand dogs are are available at most grocery stores. Sentry Foods at Hilldale (in Madison) has a great selection of all beef Hot Dogs. If you like jumbo dogs, you can pick up some rather large great tasting Kirkland brand dogs at Costco stores. Jewel stores sell Vienna Beef and Red Hot Chicago brands.


Neon Green Relish
Rolf's "Deli Style" Sweet Pickle Relish is available at Woodman's in Madison. Some Jewel stores in the Chicago area also sell Rolf's.

Pickles
Most grocery stores carry a nice selection of deli style pickles. Check out the refrigerated section, which is often located near the deli meats.

Claussen pickles are probably some of the most widely available pickles. Remember, Claussen pickles are always located in the refrigerated section of the store.

Sport Peppers
Many grocery stores carry Sport Peppers. They are usually located near the jars of olives, relishes, Giardiniera peppers, capers and non-refrigerated pickles. At some stores, you may need to look for Sport Peppers in the ethnic food aisle.

Marconi brand Sport Peppers can be found at Copps Foods and Woodman's locations in Madison.

Gino's Italian Deli in Madison (and Middleton) sells Sport Peppers.

Vienna Sport Peppers can be found at Jenifer Street Market (Madison) and at many retail outlets in the Chicago area (including Jewel).

Miller and Sons Supermarket in Verona sells Dell' Alpe brand Sport Peppers.

Poppyseed BunsPoppy Seed Buns
"S. Rosen's Mary Ann" hot dog Buns are are sold at Woodman's, Copps and Costco.

Copps appears to no longer regularly stock the poppy seed buns, but you can still get them if you ask for them a few days in advance.

Costco currently only sells Mary Ann buns without poppy seeds.

Another option is to special order poppy seed hot dog buns at grocery stores that have their own bakery.

In the Chicago area, poppy seed buns are available at most grocery stores including Jewel. Jewel stores sell Arnold Select Chicago Hot Dog Rolls and Jewel's own brand of poppy seed hot dog buns.
